Physical Property of Metal - Conductivity

Thermal conductivity of Metals:

Copper, silver, gold, aluminium and iron metals are good conductors of heat. Though all the metals are good conductors of heat, silver metal is the best conductor of heat.

Copper metal is a better conductor of heat than aluminium metal.

The cooking utensils (like a frying pan, etc.) are made of metals because metals are good conductors of heat .

Being a good conductor of heat, the metallic bottom of cooking utensil transfers the heat of gas stove quickly to the food kept inside it. We cannot hold a hot metal pan directly because it will conduct the heat quickly to our hand causing burns.

We have to hold a hot metal pan from its handle made of plastic or wood (because plastic and wood do not conduct heat).

The utensils we use in kitchen are made of zinc, copper and aluminium because these metals are good conductors of heat.

In metals, electrical conductivity depends on how easily these free electrons can move. Here's what happens when the temperature increases:

As the temperature of a metal increases, the metal's atoms and ions start to vibrate more vigorously because they gain more energy.
These vibrations cause the free electrons to collide more frequently with the vibrating atoms or ions. These frequent collisions make it harder for the electrons to flow smoothly through the metal.
Since the electrons encounter more obstacles in the form of these vibrating atoms, the metal’s ability to conduct electricity decreases with increasing temperature.

Why Does Conductivity Decrease?

The increased collisions between electrons and the vibrating atoms slow down the movement of electrons, leading to higher resistance in the material. Resistance is the opposition to the flow of current. As resistance increases, the electrical conductivity decreases because the material becomes less efficient in allowing electrons to pass through.

Example:

If you heat a copper wire, its atoms will vibrate more, leading to more electron collisions. This increased resistance makes the wire less efficient at conducting electricity as the temperature rises.

Conclusion:

In summary, as the temperature of a metal increases, the resistance increases because of the increased atomic vibrations. This leads to a decrease in electrical conductivity. Therefore, metals conduct electricity better at lower temperatures and worse at higher temperatures.
